We provide families with the skills, experience, knowledge and confidence to change their eating habits and improve their health and wellbeing

Helping families in Glasgow to eat better

What is the club? 

  • The Growing, cooking and nutrition club is a 6 week rotational programme. It is designed for parents and families to grow, cook and eat together. 

  • Each 4 hour session includes practical food growing as well as cooking, nutrition and eating. 

  • The sessions are very informal and relaxed 

  • No prior skill or knowledge required. 

  • Club aims and objectives 

  • Broad outcomes: 

  • Families learn to cook new recipes and families enjoy eating new ingredients and dishes 

  • Families engage with growing food 

  • Families increase their understanding of healthy eating

Cooking and Nutrition syllabus 

Participants should complete the course understanding the following: 

  • Appreciate the value of a healthy diet for children and adults 

  • Understand the role of nutrition in a child’s growth and development the influence of others on a child’s food habits and preferences 

  • Food Groups in a healthy diet for children and adults 

  • Understand the role of Carbohydrates in a healthy diet for children and adults 

  • Appreciate the difference between simple and complex carbohydrates 

  • Appreciate the role of fibre in a healthy diet for children and adults 

  • Understand the role of protein in a healthy diet for children and adults 

  • Appreciate the value of fat in a healthy diet for children and adults 

  • Appreciate the need for a variety of protein sources and especially the need to include iron rich and omega-3 rich proteins. 

  • Understand the role of fruit and vegetables in a healthy diet for children and adults 

  • Understand the role of antioxidants 

  • Understand the role of dairy foods and calcium enriched diary alternatives in a healthy diet for children and adults

Growing syllabus 

  • Propagate from seed directly and indirectly (and why/when we do each) 

  • Propagate from cuttings and why we do this 

  • Plant out and thin out – understand plant spacings 

  • Plant identification 

  • Define and identify weeds and understand when and how to weed 

  • Identify edible ‘weeds’ – e.g. iron rich nettles 

  • Folklore around foraged foods 

  • Understand pests and disease, and how to mitigate and react to this 

  • Understand biodiversity and importance of this 

  • Understand fertility, soil web, soil health and how to foster good soil health/fertility 

  • How and when to harvest 

  • An understanding of seasonality – when to plant and harvest etc 

  • Seasonal tasks e.g. mulching, pruning, fleecing

Optional outcomes 

  • Parents may go on to access formal Food, Nutrition and Growing training qualifications 

  • Parents train as growing, cooking and nutrition club facilitators for your service

Funding and next steps 

  • The Plot to Plate Club has been fully funded through Area Partnership grants from GCC 

  • We have a dedicated funding officer who will work with to develop funding streams to support this work in your organisation.

  • We have already worked with St Paul’s Primary School Shettleston, Silverdale Nursery, St Michael’s Primary School, St Mungo’s Academy, Parkhead Community Nursery and Tic Tacs Out Of School Care , Cranhill Development Trust
